Recently, I came to Spain with the Digital Nomad visa and this visa allows you stay and work in Spain for a company outside of this country. I’m sure that a lot of you have heard about the frustrating bureaucracy in Spain. You need a cita (appointment) for everything and you need to prepare a lot of (unnecessary) documents. However, as complicated this might feel, there are a lot of people that have been in your place and have done this before. This means that for every process, there is a one experience and this makes your process way easier because you can use other people’s experiences. In this article, we’re going to talk about how to get a padron, empadromiento or empadron in Spain.
What is Empadron in Spain?
I’m not going to explain this a lot since I know you’re not here to know the definition of this document. This is a proof that you’re living in Spain legally and you have a legit place under your name and you’re living on it. Simple as that.
Why do I need it?
Because you’re reading this article and you’re probably asked by the extranjeria agency in Spain to give them your Empadron. However, you mostly need this to get your TIE or residency card. Remember that this is not required for the visa and it’s only required when you request the TIE card and you go for the fingerprint taking.
The documents you need
There are some documents you need before getting the Empadron in Spain. The first one is your identity card. You can either give them your passport or your TIE card if you have it and you want to change the Empadron. The next thing you need is a valid house document. This can be one of these things if you’re renting a place:
- A rental contract that has your name
- Some bills from the house with your name on it
Can you use Airbnb, hotel or hostel rentals to get your padron in Spain? NO.
The contract should not be at least 6 months and it should be a room or a flat or studio. It can not be one of the things I mentioned above.
How to get the Empadron in Spain?
The first thing that you need to do is to go to the Ayuntamiento website of your city and get an appointment, and then attend to that appointment with the documents I mentioned. The websites for getting a cita (appointment) is different for each city. First, we start with Madrid.
Empadron in Madrid
Go to Ayuntamiento website and click on the option that doesn’t require identification (sin identificar).
After selecting that option, you need to select the category and also the type of the document you need. For Empadron, you can choose it like this:
After this, another select dropdown opens for your which lets you select the office that you want to attend to. If you know the office, select it from the list and if you don’t care about the office and want to the cita as soon as possible, click on the “consultar la oficina con cita más temprana” option:
After this, you need to enter your identity information and on the next page of it, select the day and time.
Empadron in Barcelona
The process is mostly the same. You need to go the Ayuntamiento website and get a cita. Click on the “Iniciar el tramite” button and confirm the alret that opens. On the next page, select the first option and click on the “Siguiente”.
On the next page, you need to select the options as it’s in the image:
And after this, you will see a list of the offices you can attend. Select the one that is closest to you and on the next two pages, you need to choose the date and time of the appointment.
If Spanish is hard for you, you can always translate the whole page using the translate option in your browser. Remember to bring all the documents with you and ask the officers if you have questions regarding the Empadron.
